ViaSalina - On the track of white gold
«Man can do without gold, but not with out salt», wrote the Roman states-man Cassiodorus. Salt was once a valuable commodity, and whoever possessed it had power. Up until the 19th century the Bernese republic obtained its «white gold» from the salt works in Franche-Comté. The «salt route» ensured that the population was kept supplied and also filled the Bernese state coffers. The atmospheric historical paths of the ViaSalina link Bern with Salins-les-Bains and Arc-et-Senans, all of them UNESCO world heritage sites.
